Parametric Patterns

For this assignment we were asked to create a definition in Grasshopper for a 2D parametric design, and generate 3 patterns from it. We will then create physical drawings using the drawing plotter.

I started off be drawing a curve in Rhino and then arrayed circles along it. I then added a range to randomize the radii. I copied this definition but flipped the curve in Rhino. I tried using the Flip parameter in GH but couldn't get it to work properly. I decided not to randomize the radii for theses circles.

I added in the definition to create outlines of multiple shapes. I Polar arrayed both sets of circles and offset them as well. I had initially tried connecting the outlines definition to the offset curves but that kept failing. Once I put it between the circles and their offsets, the definition worked. However, depending on what number the radii are set to, there will be warnings.

Below are the 3 patterns I created:

I'm still not feeling confident in this program. While I am progressing, I'm frustrated that it's not happening faster. I feel like the work I've done for this assignment is at the level I should have been for the last assignment. Once again, I have no difficulties following in class and everything the instructor says makes complete sense. But when it comes to creating definitions on my own, I'm still having a hard time finding a direction and end up just plugging things in until something interesting happens.

Below are my algorithms being drawn by the drawing plotter. I think they turned out pretty good. I used a really thick marker but I think I had it positioned too close to the paper which is what created the streak across the page. The first two drawings were fine but the last one might have benefited from a thinner marker. I also noticed with that one that the marker was going over a few sections several times which could have cause excess bleeding from the marker.

  1. This is great. Keep working at it, but do try to be patient with yourself - this environment has a notoriously steep learning curve!
